[地名探讨]取代旧拼法 广州洋名公推"Guangzhou" [复制链接]

10多年前,知道广州的外国人常把广州称之为Canton:而为了适应外国人的需要,在建国后的很长一段时间内仍沿用Canton的拼法,比如广交会叫做“CantonFairOnline”,广州大厦也拼作“Hotel Canton”。时过境迁,经过一代又一代特别是近十多年广州人努力,符合国际惯例的广州拼法Guangzhou已经深入老外“心”中:现在,知道Guangzhou的外国人越来越多,而老外对Canton却愈加陌生。广州这座崭新的国际大都市正被世人所接受。

  Canton的起源:粤语广东不准确的音译

  至于哪国人把广州拼为Canton,有多种说法,其中有两种较为有代表性。专门研究中外贸易史和澳门史的广东省社会科学院赵立人研究员说,最早到广州的外国人是16世纪的葡萄牙人。现在关于Canton一词可见的最早出处是由瑞典人著的《早期澳门史》,主要记述的是澳门以及葡萄牙人在中国的情况,其中提到了Canton一词。至于葡萄牙人最早在什么时候把广州称之为Canton,现在已无从考证。之后,英国人有关广州的著述中也使用Canton这个词。不过广州市地名办公室的一位负责人则认为,“Canton”是广州一词的“威妥玛式”的旧拼法,“威妥玛”是一个1841年至1883年间英国驻华外交官的名字,他设计了一套罗马字母拼音方案给汉字注音,“Canton”正是这种拼法的产物。专家们一致认为Canton是对广东粤语不准确的音译。

  赵立人研究员说,Canton严格意义上说它是当时的省称也就是广州的称呼。现在的香港在许多地方都称广州为Canton。

  Canton的影响:仅美国至少有五地取此名

  当时广州在世界上影响之大,可以从国外许多地名取名为“Canton”略见一斑。广州市委宣传部理论处副处长郭德焱博士说,仅美国一地至少有5个地方的地名叫做“Canton”。比如纽约州有一地区以世界各个大城市命名其村镇,其一就是“Can?ton”;密西西比州中部有个“Canton”市,建于1834年;波士顿的南郊区就叫做Can?ton;俄亥俄州一个很小的镇也起名为Can?ton等。瑞士的一个小镇也叫做Canton。

  至于当时的广州在世界上为何有如此大的影响力?中山大学历史系教授、牛津大学博士程美宝说,18世纪鸦片战争以前,当时的广州是中国对外开放的惟一城市和口岸,清政府不容许洋鬼子到处跑,这些洋人只能在Canton活动。从1757年到1840年鸦片战争长达近一个世纪的时间里,中国与西方所发生的关系主要在广州。这段时间由西方人所出版有关中国著作、文章等反映的内容基本上是当时广州即Canton的情况。所以Canton在历史上是一个很重要的世界贸易中心的代名词。西方人对广州的了解就是对中国的了解,在他们眼里Canton就是中国。

  Guangzhou的诞生:联合国采用《汉语拼音方案》

  对语言和文化有一定研究的广东外语外贸大学英文学院研究生部主任、教授邹启明博士说,Canton真正变换为Guangzhou是在上个世纪70年代后期。1958年2月11日,全国人大批准颁布《汉语拼音方案》。《汉语拼音方案》是中国人自己按照科学的语音学原理制定的专门拼写标准普通话的方案,因此从1979年起联合国决定采用《汉语拼音方案》作为在各种拉丁字母文字中转写中国人名、地名的标准;1981年8月国际标准化组织通过决议;规定把《汉语拼音方案》作为文献工作中拼写有关中国的名称、词语的国际标准。从此,Peking(北京)变成了Beijing,Canton变成了Guangzhou。

  Guangzhou的崛起:迈向现代化国际大都市

  如何对待和处理Canton和Guangzhou的关系呢?中山大学历史系主任、教授、博士生导师刘志伟博士有自己的见解。他说,一个名词代表了一个时代的特有涵义,正如土耳其的首都伊斯坦布尔在历史上曾经被称为拜占庭和君士坦丁堡,不同的称呼从不同的角度勾勒出了这个城市的历史画面。Canton、Kwangchow也同样从另外一个独特的角度描绘了广州这个位于中国南大门的城市的面貌:Canton是近代繁忙的通商口岸,它的形象是一群衣着长袍、脑后留着一条长辫子的人们在忙碌着;而Guangzhou则是一个在快速发展、日新月异地迈向国际的大都市,它的形象是美丽的珠江、繁忙的广交会和一群有活力的现代人。两者不可同日而语。

  广东外语外贸大学英语语言与文化学院教授肖惠云教授说,英国人和美国人出版早期和当代的大词典中,在解释“Canton”时基本都是“anothernameforametropolis,Guangzhou,inthesouthofChinainearliertimes(就是现在中国南部一个大城市广州的早期的称呼)”。BBC等一些国际大的通讯社和传媒基本上在谈到广州时,都叫做Guangzhou。

  结论:Guangzhou的影响大得多

  程美宝博士说,50岁以下的外国人是不知道Canton的。只有对中国历史有很好了解的老人才知道Canton,随着广州的日新月异,知道Canton的人会越来越少,而了解Guangzhou的人却越来越多。

  当谈到Guangzhou能迅速取代Canton的原因时,专家们无一例外地认为:根本的原因就在于广东、广州在中国改革开放过程中承担着重要的角色。经过20多年特别是近10多年的发展,广州以占全国约二百分之一的人口缴纳了全国约二十分之一的税收,2003年广州市生产总值达3466多亿元,世界500强大企业已有115家进入广州———现在广州正进一步建成带动全省、辐射华南、影响东南亚的现代化大都市,这才是广州真正取胜的根本。(何有贵)

不過頂樓引文中的「当时广州在世界上影响之大,可以从国外许多地名取名为“Canton”略见一斑。」呵呵呵呵呵,笑一下就好了。那兩位「广州市委宣传部理论处副处长郭德焱博士」、「中山大学历史系教授、牛津大学博士程美宝」查一查牛津英語字典應該不難知道canton一詞本身另有意思。和廣州英文舊稱同音同拼法只是歷史上的一個玩笑而已。

而且Canton也不是“威妥玛(韦氏)”拼法,只是西方人最初约定俗成的一个词,听起来更象是“广东”的音译。韦式拼法拼广州是Kwangchow。

我有些广州朋友曾经还以为Canton是“广东”的意思呢。我听到日本人似乎是读カントン(kangdong),dong的o是a/o/e的o,更像是”广东“了。
威妥玛拼法广州是Kuang-chou。Kwangchow是邮政式拼法,不过该拼法用Canton的比Kwangchow还要多。
邮政式拼法中,广东、广西、福建的一些地名,是用当地方言的读音来拼写的。

其实Canton和广东的发音并不是很像,不过Canton现在好像有时指广东也有时指广州,不过在国外Canton大多数是用来指广州.

不过我觉得Peking不能和Canton相提并论的,因为Peking是威氏拼音的拼发,当时中国所有的地名都有其拼成的名字,像上面也有个朋友说到广州也有一个威氏拼法的名字就是Kuang-chou or Kwangchow,而Canton是以前国内仅有的几个不以其汉语发音而命名的外文名字,另一个就是Macau吧,(我觉的香港和厦门都不算,因为她们的外文名应该从当地方言的发音而来的).

在航空领域,广州的简称仍然是CAN。

威妥玛式和邮政式虽然有些相似,但是不同的。如网友chwang的名字拼法就是邮政式,如果用威妥玛式就是chuang或ch'uang。
厦门称Amoy是邮政式。
北京称Peking是邮政式,威妥玛式称Pei-ching。
我说的是Kwangchow是邮政式拼音的另一种拼法,不是威妥玛式,威妥玛式只拼作Kuang-chou。

综合规模=人口(百万)*3+面积(万km2)
面积包括陆地、内水、基线之内的内海以及12海里领海的面积。

而连字符号也可以省去的。

邮政式中,广东称Kwangtung,根据的是官话,如果是以粤语来拼写的话,就应该拼作Kwongtung(读作gwong2 dung1)了。

美国Ohio州的Canton市是以广州名字命名的。当初建市的时候当地最大地产商去过广州,因此命名。

这个市虽然不大,但是在美国还是有点名气的,因为是美国pro football hall of fame美国职业橄榄球名人堂所在地。
