China, Texas
China is a city located in Jefferson County, Texas. As of the 2000 census,
the city had a total population of 1,112.
History
A water stop named "China Grove" was made after the Texas and New Orleans
Railroad completion in 1860. China Grove Post Office was established from
March to May 1887, and was succeeded by China Post Office in 1893. This
locale was later made famous in the song "China Grove" by the group The
Doobie Brothers.
China incorporated another community, larger Nashland (organized by Charlie
Nash in 1900) after the old China depot were burned down in 1906.
Geography
China is located at 30°3'15" North, 94°19'55" West (30.054259,
-94.331882)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of
3.4 km2 (1.3 mi2). 3.3 km2 (1.3 mi2) of it is land and 0.77% is water.
