金奈市政局，2011年10月，正式进行市区扩张，划入邻近的9个市议会，8个镇和25个村。面积从174平方公里，增加到436平方公里。
扩张前，
2001年
人口普查时，人口为422万，列当时印度第5位，次于孟买、德里、加尔各答和班加罗尔
2011年人口普查时，人口为468万，列第6位，次于孟买、德里、班加罗尔、海得拉巴、艾哈迈达巴德，第7、8位分别为加尔各答和前次提到的2006年扩张后的苏拉特。因为班加罗尔和海得拉巴2市，在2007年已经进行了一次大
规模扩张，排名靠前。艾哈迈达巴德估计也是扩张了，容我找找资料。
扩张后，
总人口将可能超过800万，和班加罗尔相当，成为第4或第3大市。在1991年普查时，金奈是当时的印度第4大。
另外加尔各答一直没有扩张出加尔各答县，不知道是不是也在酝酿合并。
看来，印度的市镇村合并也是一项常规活动啊。尤其是2006年以后，似乎有大幅推进。

CHENNAI: The AIADMK government in the state has decided to expand Chennai city. In a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday, chief minister J Jayalalithaa spelt out her plan and sought support to improve the core infrastructure, including water supply and underground sewerage system.
The plan to expand the city, a dream of the former deputy chief minister and DMK leader, M K Stalin, had met with stiff opposition in a few local bodies like Ambattur and Madhavaram in December last due to differences on the delimitation of wards. The merger, if it comes through, will bring nine municipalities, eight town panchayats and 25 village panchayats within the city limits, extending it from 174 sq km to 436 sq km.
